Justus Reinhold Schramm founded the first brewery in Tartu, Estonia in 1826. From the onset his brewery was renowned for the high quality of its beer which has won many prizes at beer fairs.
The enterprise caught the eye of A. Le Coq & Co that bought the local brewery in 1913, and subsequently changed the name of the company to A. Le Coq. Albert Le Coq was originally a Belgian businessman, who had founded a beer company in London in 1808.
The company bottled beer purchased from the local breweries, and A. Le Coq became famous for its strong, dark Imperial porter that was exported to its end market in Russia. Due to the competitive market situation, A. Le Coq & Co decided to buy a brewery in Russia in order to better compete in the Russian porter and beer markets.
A suitable brewery was found in Tartu, where tasty beer respecting over a 200-year old tradition is still manufactured to this day.
A. Le Coq is currently an Olvi Group Company and it is the biggest beverage seller in Estonia.
